Coastal Flow 2024 In Situ
The Coastal Flow painting series was completed in the Summer of 2024 in Brooklin, Maine. Broeksmit, who is based in New York City and has a studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, returns to Maine each summer.
The view outside her studio has been a preoccupation and the subject of several series of paintings. The body of work based on this motif shows that her perception of the coastal landscape is continuously evolving.
More than ever, this new work reflects an abstract way of seeing the coastline and a lightness of touch. Broeksmit's atmospheric brushstrokes of pale pink, gold, blue and orange seem to be a metaphor for the intersection of earth and water. Amongst her influences are Turner and Monet, as reflected in works like Whispers of Land and Sea and Shoreline Three.
