Light Over Water series

My paintings begin in the sketchbook, where watercolors, iridescent washes, and gestural marks gather like breath on a page. These sketchbooks are not studies but origins, the place where memory and perception first take form. Light Over Water carries these beginnings forward into oil. What once shimmered with transparency on paper now deepens on canvas, yet light remains constant. Iridescent hues move across the surface, catching and dissolving like tide. The series was born from the view around my barn studio in Brooklin, Maine. The horizon, the apple tree, the crowns of bee balm and thistle, even the quiet geometry of sea urchins. The colors, too, are steeped in history. Inspired not only by the shifting tones of sea and sky, but also by the frescoes of Pompeii, where pigments still breathe with radiance across centuries. These paintings are not depictions of place but thresholds, where the fleeting and the eternal meet, and light itself becomes subject.
